Caution-Falling Debris

Did you know that an accumulation of debris on your roof can cause serious damage? This is damage that might void your shingle manufacturer’s warranty and, in some cases, could even lead to the cancellation of your homeowner’s insurance policy.
Large trees with overhanging branches are the leading cause of debris build-up on roofs. Leaves, pine needles, and even branches can fall onto the roof deck, trapping water and stopping it from flowing into the gutters. This excess water can cause ice damming, but it also promotes the growth of moss and leads to the premature deterioration of your roof covering. If those branches break off during high winds, they can even puncture your roof deck—causing extensive damage.
So, what do you do? From the ground, visually inspect your roof deck, valleys, and around your vents. These areas should be free of moss and debris. Visually inspect your trees. They should be back, away from your house, and not overhanging your roof. Large shrubs and ornamental plants should also be kept away from your house because they, too, can trap water against your home, causing damage to your siding and fascia.
If during your visual inspection, you notice branches overhanging your roof deck, you can call a licensed tree service or an arborist in your area to have the branches trimmed or the trees removed. If you have an accumulation of moss and debris on your roof, you should contact your contractor and schedule an appointment for service—your contractor might even be able to help with those overhanging branches.
