The warmer weather is here! Now is a great time to get outside and spruce up the exterior of your home and yard. Sometimes a little curb appeal might be all that’s needed to enhance the home’s appearance. Other times, you may want to consider making more significant improvements, like replacing a deck or roof. In this article, we’ll discuss ways to add a little curb appeal and beautify your outdoor spaces.
Roofing & Gutters
The roof can be one of the home’s largest, most noticeable parts. Remember to include the roof and gutters when adding curb appeal. Keeping your roof clean is part of routine home maintenance and should regularly be performed by a qualified roofing professional.
Check the gutters and downspouts for clogs and visible signs of leaks. Keeping the gutters emptied can’t be emphasized strongly enough. Expensive damage can occur to the eaves and siding when the gutters become clogged with leaves and other debris. You can empty the gutters yourself or hire a professional. If you choose to empty the gutters yourself, follow basic ladder safety rules, use caution, and wear personal protective equipment to avoid injury.
Create An Entrance
Check the exterior paint. If it’s worn, cracked, faded, or peeling, it’s time for a fresh coat. Neutral colors make an excellent choice. If you want to make a bold statement, consider painting the front door in a vibrant color; then update the hardware, add a matching kick plate, and a new welcome mat. Fill some large pots with brightly colored flowers and place them on either side of the door or down the steps leading to the driveway.
Sidewalk & Driveway
Take a look at the driveway, sidewalks, and other concrete or masonry areas around your home, such as patios and outdoor barbecues. Are they clean? Concrete begins to look unkempt when grease, oil, dirt, and other grime are left to accumulate. A gentle scrubbing might do the trick, or you may need to call a professional.
Lawn & Garden
Look at your current landscaping and decide what to keep and what to toss out. Dead plants and shrubs should be removed, along with weeds, leaves, and other debris. Keep the grass trimmed, and plant colorful flowers, ornamental shrubs, or both in your flowerbeds, or create new flower beds to plant in. Top off all flower beds with a fresh layer of high-quality mulch.
Whether you’re doing small projects around the house to enhance its curb appeal or you’re undertaking major renovations, the quality of the work is important. Poorly completed projects detract from the appearance and can actually cost you more money in the long run. When in doubt, hire a professional.
